On Mars

This series of sketches was a workup for a commissioned piece. I tossed around several ideas, gradually working closer to the finished product (seen below), a four panel watercolour painting (of which each panel is about 16"x12" and meant to be framed seperately). The finished work was simply titled "On Mars" and depicts two astronauts on the Red Planet. Mars has always held my fascination, so this was an opportunity to really get into something I had a passion for. (Yes, I'm one of those "nutty" people who would take a one way trip to Mars, just for the chance to stand on another planet and view its alien vistas.)

Anyway, as you can see, paintings are often like books and go through an evolutionary process, often turning out quite unlike the initial concepts that gave them birth.
