Maps of Sophie's World

During the course of writing Becoming Darkness I sketched out maps of the Haven archipelago and of the city of Caelo as reference tools. When you're writing a novel it helps to have visual aids like this -- if for no other reason than to ensure consistency when you have your characters moving about in their environment. Your maps don`t have to be fancy, but when you`re creating worlds that don`t actually exist, you`re wise to make some. Keeping all that information in your head isn`t easy -- even if you`ve got a good memory. And maps are much better and easier to use than a set of notes. Below are the two originals I did for the book. Even before I started writing I had a very clear view of the world in which Sophie lived and the maps were simply a way of solidifing that.
